Whew, our chests are a lot lighter after yesterday’s “True
Confessions” episode. We could now confidently go on enjoying ourselves as we
wait for Renske to arrive. This we were going to do in Cooktown and environs.
Today we drove off south to Edmonton to a caravan dealer to see if we could get
a side shade for the awning. Yes, they had them at a show-stopping discount:
$220. We snorted politely and resolved to go get the $30 model we had seen
before.
So, turn around and north through Cairns to the
Kuranda/Mareeba turn-off. Then we drove up the pass, the X-Trail manfully
holding its own up the winding road, sandwiched between two large trucks. At
Mareeba it was time for coffee so we went to this grindery and ordered coffees
and a very rich chocolate cake.
We sat down in their little restaurant and were jolted by the cry “Hello Dirk!”. There were Deb from St Luke’s and her husband, just returned from Cape York! Small world indeed! We chatted for a while before they went off to oversee a repair being done to their vehicle.
Then on through Mt Molloy, Mt Carbine and into that savannah country that had so impressed me 6 years ago. We arrived at Palmer River Roadhouse in good time and chose an unpowered spot with plenty of room, though a bit close to the generator.

Joke and the caravan up there, the generator just round the corner... |

Running repairs - the rumour that I have put on weight is totally unfounded |
